An apricot kernel (Prunus armeniaca, "Armenian plum" in Latin) refers to the kernel of a species of Prunus, classified with the plum in the subgenus Prunus. They contain Laetrile and Amygdalin which is also known as Vitamin B17.

Apricot kernels are strong-tasting and bitter. They feature in recipes for apricot jam, and Italian amaretto cookies and liqueur.

The apricot seed was claimed as the cure for all cancers over 35 years ago. It was even more strongly claimed that when one eats about 7 apricot seeds per day one can never develop cancer, just as one can never get scurvy if they have an orange every day, or pellagra if they have some B vitamins every day.

The FSA put out a safety bulletin with regards to Apricot Kernels (searchable at foodstandards.gov.uk) that considers a safe intake to be equivalent to one to two kernels a day. . . but we have many customers happily getting through 20+Apricot Kernels per day and not having any issues at all related to apricot kernels.
