Have You Tried Haskap Berries?

It seems there’s not a week goes by without the announcement of a new superfood, and the latest one is said to give even the magnificent blueberry a run for its money in the superfood stakes!

The haskap berry is like a more cylinder-shaped extra tart blueberry, tasting like a delicious combination of blueberries, raspberries and blackberries, the Haskap berry, also known as blue honeysuckle or honeyberries, these super berries contain four times the anthocyanins than blueberries.

It has even made its way into the British Columbian craft beer scene, with haskap flavoured Explore BC IPA, described as ‘distinctive IPA bitterness mellowed by a gently tart and almost syrupy finish from the fruit’.

Anthocyanins, which also give the berry its purple-red colour, are a class of compounds with antioxidant effects. In other words, they have great anti-inflammatory benefits for the body, reduce blood pressure, and fight free-radicals that can trigger disease, as well as giving our exercise regimens a boost.

Haskap berries are also a very good source of potassium, which is needed by our bodies to help build protein and muscle, and they are also said to improve our gut health. And that’s not all, as the berries are listed as improving eyesight and the appearance of our skin.

You can introduce the berries, which are native to Japan, to your food freeze-dried as a powder. Sprinkle it on yoghurt, oats and granola, or add to your smoothies.
