The History of Valerian
Valerian has been used for over 2,000 years as a natural remedy for restlessness, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. Ancient Greek and Roman physicians like Hippocrates and Galen praised its calming effects.
In medieval Europe, it was known as a “cure-all” herb, commonly used for nervous conditions and digestive discomfort. By the 16th century, it had become a staple in folk medicine and was even used during wartime to ease stress and tension.
Today, Valerian remains one of the most trusted herbs for promoting relaxation and restful sleep, valued for its gentle, non-habit-forming properties.
What is Valerian root extract?
Valerian is a perennial flowering plant native to Europe and parts of Asia, best known for its calming and sedative properties. The root of the plant is used in herbal medicine to help ease anxiety, reduce nervous tension, and support restful sleep.
Often referred to as “nature’s tranquilliser,” Valerian root contains naturally occurring compounds—such as valerenic acid and volatile oils—that are believed to interact with the brain’s GABA system, which helps regulate nerve impulses and promote relaxation.
Traditionally taken as a tea, powder, or tincture, Valerian has earned a long-standing reputation as a gentle, non-addictive aid for stress relief and sleep support.
