The British love of a good cuppa is well known; a tea or coffee is the perfect way to start the day for many of us, and can provide welcome breaks throughout the working day. Some people enjoy a hot drink as a soothing night time ritual, or a pick-me-up to power through the afternoon.

However, it’s well known that overdoing caffeine can make us jittery, dehydrated and affect the quality of our sleep. Fortunately, there’s now an excellent range of organic tea blends to explore that can provide a natural energy boost or a moment of calm without any unwanted side-effects. In fact, many have positive benefits for our health. Here are some suggestions!

Matcha Tea Powder

Matcha tea is harvested in Kyoto, Japan, using only the green tips of the leaves to ensure the finest flavour and the densest nutrient content. The tea is finely ground and whisked in hot water to provide a satisfying full-bodied flavour. The organic product is rich in micronutrients and antioxidants.

Many people prefer Matcha as an alternative to regular teas, because it combines caffeine with a type of amino acid called L-theanine. This is believed to provide a refreshing energy boost without the jitters and sudden crash that traditional tea and coffee can induce.

Chamomile Flower Tea

The chamomile flower has been used for centuries as a natural calming remedy, which scientists now know is due to the presence of an antioxidant called apigenin. This is thought to bind to the receptors in the brain that regulate emotions, and it can potentially soothe anxiety and promote a better night’s sleep.

For a high quality chamomile tea, use organic whole flowers. Cut the flowers finely and steep one teaspoon in 250ml of freshly boiled water for a traditional relaxing remedy.

Turmeric Latte

Turmeric is recognised as one of the most beneficial spices for good health, and is a key component of Ayurvedic medicine, a traditional ancient Indian approach to holistic healing.  Its active compound is curcumin, which is known to have anti-inflammatory benefits.

The spice has a distinctive woody flavour, and is delicious when combined with oat milk to make a latte.

Cacao Powder Hot Chocolate

Cacao powder is a minimally processed form of cocoa powder that retains a high nutrient density. It is rich in antioxidants, flavonoids, and magnesium. These compounds are associated with several health benefits including reduced inflammation, improved circulation, and reduced risk of diabetes and heart disease.

The powerful flavonoids in cacao powder may also boost mood and have a protective effect on cognitive function.  It’s also lower in sugars and fats than regular cocoa, making it a healthier alternative for hot drinks and baking ingredients. The powder can be blended with spices such as cinnamon and ginger, and honey or other natural sweeteners.
