Organic & Wild Chaga Mushroom Powder
The chaga mushroom grows uniquely on the birch tree and is almost as hard as the wood itself. It is unique in that it is the most nutritionally dense of all tree growths. Known by the Siberians as the ‘Gift from God’ and the “Mushroom of Immortality”, organic chaga powder has been used by humans to support health for thousands of years. The Japanese call it “The Diamond of the Forest”, while the Chinese deem it “King of Plants”.

Fruiting body or mycelium?
We get this question all the time, a common misconception with regards to chaga. Chaga grows in a very different way to other mushrooms such as lions mane and turkey tail which have a separate mycelium and fruiting body. Chaga mushroom is a type of fungus that grows mainly on the bark of birch trees. Chaga produces a woody growth, or conk. The sterile conk is irregularly formed and resembles burnt charcoal on the outside, but inside has a soft core with an orange colour. It is not the fruiting body of the fungus, but a sclerotium or mass of mycelium, mostly black because of a great amount of melanin. Our chaga powder is made from the whole chaga mushroom (is it literally sawn off the tree).

Brewing instructions for chaga tea
Research shows the best way to draw the nutrients from chaga is by water extraction. We do not recommend using boiling water with raw chaga, since the hot temperature may corrupt the melanin complex and the polysaccharides, among other active ingredients.
Place 1 litre of purified water in a pot. Bring water up to roughly 50°c. Add 1-3 dessert spoons per litre (depending on how strong you prefer it to be) of powder into the water. Cover with lid, take off the heat and set aside to brew for 10-12 hours. Strain off and store in a glass jar in a cool dark place. Chaga tea can keep for up to 14 days in the fridge.
Alternatively you can just pop a teaspoon straight into glass of juice or a smoothie.
How our wild Organic Chaga Powder is processed
It is harvested in October every year from the Changbai mountains in Northeast China.
They are cut by hand and are only found growing in the wild. Once cut, they are laid out in a temperature controlled room at 26-28°c and relative humidity of around 80°c. The mushrooms receive scattered light and ventilation each day for around 20 days. They are then dried between 40-60°c, reducing the moisture to 12% in order to harvest the powder.
