Native to the tropical climates of the Amazon rainforest of South and Central America, pau d’arco comes from the inner bark of the Taheebo tree, a large canopy tree that can grow up to 30m in height and 2m – 3m in trunk diameter. Used for thousands of years in South America, pau d’arco has traditionally been utilised to treat all manner of ailments including maleria, infections, the common cold and topically on skin conditions and insect bites.
Pau d’arco is now prized for its anti-fungal properties, espeically for treating cases of candida. Candida is a necessary yeast which sits within the intestinal tract, in small amounts it aids absorption but can easily get overgrown if the bodies PH levels become unbalanced, resulting in a number of possible symptoms. Pau d’arco is thought to be particualtly effective at treating this condition because it contains the compounds lapachol and xyloidon which are said to inhibit candida growth.
Pau d’arco has also been praised for its anti-inflammatory effects, attributed to the presence of Nrf2, a protein which protects against oxidative stress caused by inflammation. Not only this, but pau d’arco contains a number of antioxidant compunds, including quercetin, flavonoids and carnosol that protect against free radicals and could slow down the ageing process.
Boil 1 teaspoon of pau d’arco bark in 1 cup of water for approx. 10 minutes, sieve and enjoy up to 3 times a day.
