With a minimum of 80% protein content, our pea protein is fantastic for anyone looking to build and maintain muscle, or simply to add extra protein to their diet.

Peas are one of the earliest cultivated food crops. Evidence of cultivation dates from Neolithic times. Peas are wonderful at fixing nitrogen from the atmosphere, making them an environmentally sustainable crop as they don’t need nitrogen fertilizer.

yellow split peasProtein is a macro-nutrient essential to good health and growth. While proteins are best known for their role in growth and maintenance of muscle mass, they also have a vital role in the structure of bones and tendons, muscle contraction and nutrient transportation. Proteins are made up of amino acids, commonly described as the ‘building blocks’ of proteins.

Our bodies are made up of around 75% water and protein is the largest component of the bodies muscle, on average about 20%. When the muscles are placed under stress during exercise or weight training, the component proteins break down and the muscle fibres separate. Protein synthesis is the process of repair and growth and requires raw materials in the form of amino acids. For muscle building and to gain muscle mass, protein synthesis must exceed protein breakdown.

Possible health benefits of pea protein

Our organic pea protein powder contains a minimum protein content of 80% and contains all eight of the essential amino acids. Pea protein is hypo-allergenic which means it is less likely to cause allergic reactions when compared to protein powders derived from egg, soya or milk.

The relationship between protein intake and growth or maintenance of muscle mass is well established. Additional protein is vital for athletes and people looking to add muscle mass. Through the process of protein synthesis, amino acids repair and develop muscle in both endurance and strength training.

Good quality protein intake is essential for people of all ages and at all stages of growth. In elderly people, loss of muscle mass (known as sarcopenia) is a significant health issue, as increased frailty raises the risk of falls.

Meals high in pea protein powder make you feel fuller and less likely to overeat, pea protein can have a valuable role in weight management and maintenance of a healthy composition.

We have a variety of different protein powders available: hemp, sunflower and pumpkin.

Suggested use:

Add to smoothies or shakes with any of our fruit or cacao powders. Try adding a tablespoon or two of our organic pea protein to soups and casseroles to provide a hidden protein boost.
