Acai PowderAbout our organic freeze-dried acai powder

Grown in the tropical Amazon regions of Brazil, these small, deep purple berries have a unique nutritional composition and wonderful flavour profile that has been described as a mixture of chocolate and blueberries.

Freeze-dried to lock in essential nutrients, acai has grown in popularity in the last few years due mainly to it’s dense antioxidant content, but also because it is a source of vitamin A, B1, B2 and B3 and C, plant sterols, amino acids, dietary fibre and the minerals calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, phosphorus and zinc. As well as the anti-inflammatory nutrients anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, protocatechuic acid, procyanidins and epicatechin.

This vast combination of nutrients is said to contribute to increased energy levels, healthy, glowing skin, metabolism regulation, stimulate healthy digestion and the prevention of oxidative stress.

Suggested use:

Acai powder is incredibly versatile, it can be added to smoothies, shakes, juices, nutrient shots, acai bowls, porridge, breakfasts, puddings, cakes and raw food recipes.

How our acai is processed

Our Acai comes from Pará in northern Brazil. Local people who make their living from harvesting Acai berries are known as ribeirinhos or “people who live on the river’s riverines”. These ribeirinhos form co-operatives to harvest the Acai fruit daily and take it to marketplaces before it is transported down river for processing.

The fresh berries are then carefully cleaned and washed before the pulp is extracted, pasteurized and frozen.

Our acai is freeze dried within 24 hours of being harvested to preserve the maximum amount of antioxidants, as these unstable compounds can begin to degrade immediately and are responsible for the majority of acai’s health benefits.

The quality of our freeze dried acai powder is apparent from the colour; a vibrant deep purple produced by the anthocyanins cyanidin 3-glucoside and cyanidin 3-rutinoside. Freeze drying involves exposing the acai pulp to temperatures of – 40°C whilst in a vacuum environment, which eliminates all water through a process called sublimation. Over processing of acai through other methods of preservation such as spray drying (heating to temperatures over 80°C to remove moisture) and standard freezing can result in a brown powder with vastly decreased levels of antioxidants.

Antioxidant levels in fresh acai are 70 TE/100g (trolox equivalent, the measurement of a substance’s antioxidant capacity compared to Trolox, an antioxidant derivative of vitamin E) which is the highest of any fruit, twice the antioxidant level of blueberries and ten times that of grapes. By freeze drying the pulp, up to 80% of the vitamins and minerals present in the fresh pulp can be preserved and safely stored at room temperature for up to 18 months.
