Psyllium contains a spongy fibre that swells in liquid, when taken internally it can reduce appetite and is often used to aid dieting and fasting. Every 100g of psyllium powder provides 71g of soluble fibre; a similar amount of oat bran would contain only 5g of soluble fibre.
Psyllium is one of the simplest, healthiest and most effective herbs in the ‘swollen foods’ family. Psyllium has also been used for both diarrhoea and constipation because it can produce easy bowel movements with a loose stool in situations of constipation. Psyllium also soaks up a significant amount of water in the digestive tract, thereby making stool firmer and slow down the pass in instances of diarrhoea.
In a study of people with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease (inflammatory bowel disorders), psyllium seeds were shown to be very effective in moderate cases of diarrhoea from either condition in decreasing recurrences of the disease.

Psyllium is often taken as part of a detox program, add 1 tablespoon of psyllium to a small glass of water and mix well, drink as it is or add juice for flavour. Psyllium can be added to smoothies or used in raw food cooking as a thickening/binding agent.
